A Memorial Park-area home that was once owned by four-time Indianapolis 500 winner AJ Foyt has hit the market with an initial asking price of $6.35 million.
The 7,346-square-foot home at 9314 Sandringham Drive has five bedrooms, five bathrooms and two bathrooms and was designed by renowned architect Clovis Heimsath.
The home is in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood of Houston’s Memorial Drive corridor, about 1 mile west of Memorial Park.
“We are thrilled to add this stunning Memorial home to our active listings in Houston,” said Nancy Almodovar, CEO and co-founder of Nan & Co. Properties, which is handling the listing. “Our team loves to sell homes with a unique history — whether it be a famous athlete who previously owned it or an iconic architect that built it — and this home has both of those elements.”
The home at 9314 Sandringham was built in 1974 for Foyt, a Houston native who has since been inducted into numerous motorsports halls of fame for his driving prowess. While Foyt was the original owner, the home has had several subsequent owners.
The home sits on two lots, totaling 89,122 square feet, or just over 2 acres.
Heimsath designed the home during his “secular” phase and came up with a floor plan that resembles the shape of a crucifix.
The downstairs walls are clad in brick, which in corporates design elements that give a nod to designs by Frank Lloyd Wright.
A sunken, first-floor sunroom opens onto the backyard and is adorned with friezes and clerestory windows, that is, windows placed above eye level that bring in more natural light.
The home has vaulted ceilings throughout, and each bedroom has its own en suite bathroom. The primary bathroom has its own private courtyard.
Residents also have access to a walnut-walled library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and cabinets.
The primary living room has 26-foot ceilings, a fireplace, a hidden wet bar and custom windows.
The kitchen, meanwhile, was updated recently with granite countertops and a travertine backsplash.
Outside of the main living area, 9314 Sandringham has a four-car garage — which might be expected of a home built for a professional racecar driver — and an attached workshop. The driveway is capable of parking up to 25 cars off the street.
A separate guest house has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The guest house has a cedar-lined living room with a fireplace and a midcentury kitchen with original appliances.
The home’s large, rectangular pool still has its original diving board.
“This home really is a piece of a bygone era of Houston,” said Charlie Bingham, Realtor at Nan & Company Properties. “It has so much architectural and cultural history to offer any potential homebuyer.”
