When you think of “summer” what do you see? Endless beaches and tan lines? Road trips and junk food? Summer is the perfect time for adventure, and the great thing about living in Texas is that you don’t need to leave the state to find one! Looking to get away for the week, or even just a weekend? No problem! Whether you’re planning for a romantic trip for two or a family vacay for 10, we’ve got suggestions for a little bit of everything!
1. CONCAN, TEXAS
Out in southwest Texas lies a little piece of paradise known as the Frio River. Seen above, the Frio is a clear, spring-fed river that flows through picturesque Texas greenery. Get yourself a cabin at Garner State Park and spend a week or more because we guarantee you won’t get bored! If you somehow get tired of floating the crystal-clear waters, drive into Concan where you can participate in horseback riding, golf, hunting and dancing!
2. CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS
Corpus is a great summer destination because it’s not too far of a drive, but still possesses beautiful sandy beaches and plenty of sights to see. Have a campfire on the beach, surf the waves, ride horseback along the waters and check for sea turtles. There’s so much to do here! Corpus Christi is also home to the Texas State Aquarium where you can view dolphins and other marine animals, as well as the South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, which makes Corpus a great destination if travelling with kids! If you’re interested in history, visit the USS Lexington, a museum and education facility dedicated to the aircraft carrier by the same name.
3. TEXAS HILL COUNTRY WINERIES
If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, explore the Texas Hill Country! With its lush, rolling hills and colorful wildflowers, it’s no wonder why this scenery inspired George Strait’s ode to bright stars, prairies skies and blooming sage. The region has more than 51 unique and visually stunning wineries to explore, each with its own personality and winemaking style. Stay at a cozy bed and breakfast, a luxurious golf resort or a secluded cabin. Whatever you’re looking to experience, the Hill Country has limitless possibilities.
4. BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
If you hate how crowded national parks have been, you’ll love Big Bend! Located almost 600 miles west of Houston, it is one of the most remote and least visited parks in America, which means that lots of people are missing out on major adventure! With over 100 miles of paved roads, 150 miles of dirt roads, and about 200 miles of hiking trails the park offers nearly limitless opportunities for scenic driving, hiking, camping, backpacking, mountain biking, horseback riding, bird watching, wildlife observation, and stargazing! Additionally, the Rio Grande borders the park for 118 miles, providing options for rafting, canoeing and kayaking excursions!
5. AUSTIN, TEXAS
Perfect for the outdoor enthusiast and music lover alike, the truly vibrant city of Austin has lots of excitement to offer! Often praised as the live music capital of the world, this city is constantly hosting concerts and shows all over the city. If you’re looking to cool down from the warm weather, Lake Travis offers boating, fishing and other water sports, or you can visit Barton Springs Pool, fed by a natural spring that maintains a year-round temperature of 68 degrees! Dine at any of Austin’s unique restaurants, stroll through the antique whimsicality on South Congress, and tour the local breweries. Our state capital is the perfect weekend getaway!
