Houston's New Art District

Known for its vibrant diversity, Houston is home to a booming art scene that is vast and widely celebrated. Houston’s new Arts District is dedicated to showcasing the various artwork of Houston artists, as well as international and national artists alike. The Arts District is located in the Washington Avenue Corridor and home to over three hundred spaces that are used by a variety of artists who specialize in studio art all the way to performance art. We recommend starting your trip to the Arts District Houston by stopping by the Welcome Center located at 2101 Winter Street, open Wednesday to Saturday from Noon until 5:00 PM. At the Welcome Center, visitors will be directed on where they can start their tour and can pick up a map of the area and a walking guide. Throughout the Arts District Houston, alternate locations to check out artwork displays include the Railroad Tracks, Buffalo Bayou Park, The Train Shed, Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, and Site Gallery at Sawyer Yards. Visitors can experience performing arts in the district at the following locations, Station Improv and Sketch Theater, Site Gallery At Sawyer Yards, Cafeza, 4th Wall Theatre Company, and Meca. On the second Saturday of each month, the district welcomes all to attend the Market at Sawyer Yards, 1502 Sawyer Street, where you can purchase anything from crafts to food made by various artists. 

 

A trip to the Arts District Houston must include a few stops for food and drink. Restaurants like Poitín and Julep offer a wide variety of food options for visitors. Stop by for a beer at Buffalo Brewing Company which has a top-level balcony that looks out to Downtown Houston. Looking for a quick bite to eat or a caffeinated pick me up, check out Catalina Coffee. Make sure to stop by Henderson & Kane, an old fashion general store serving coffee, locally sourced produce, beer, and more.
