MAKING RELOCATING EASIER ON THE FAMILY

Relocating to a new city or even a new part of town can be exciting, but for some members of the family, moving to an unfamiliar place is scary and unsettling. Here are a few pieces of advice for making relocating easier and maybe even fun.

Introduce the idea of relocating to your family early. Moving can be a wonderful experience, but it can also be stressful, especially for young children who often do not understand all the complexities involved. Involving your kids in the decision-making process will help them feel less anxious and more empowered. Show your family the amenities they could enjoy in their new neighborhood, and allow them to have a voice during the process.

Make a list of neighborhoods that are right for your family. Looking for areas with great schools is a no-brainer, but what about proximity to other recreational activities? And as a parent, there are certain conveniences you will want as well, such as nice grocery stores, a nearby post office, cleaners and other businesses that are part of everyday life. While websites are a great resource for researching neighborhoods, take your search offline too and drive around areas of interest to you and your family.

Work with a great realtor. At Nan and Company Properties, it is our job to have a bird’s eye view of real estate options in the greater Houston area. This means we have resources and information that aren’t readily available to the average buyer or seller. We also know at-a-glance which neighborhoods are great more family friendly and which cater more to singles retirees. We also help with filling out paperwork, searching through listings and many other tasks that can weigh you down during your search.

Plan a school orientation. The toughest part of moving for your kids could be parting ways with their school friends and teachers and getting acclimated in a new environment. To make the transition a little easier, consider making a visit to the school with your child to help them feel less overwhelmed. Meeting the teacher or a few classmates ahead of time may ease their minds and cause them to become excited about making new friends.
