Located in northwest-central Houston, the Heights was established in 1896 as a suburb for Houstonians who didn’t want to live inside the hustle of the city. Flashforward to 2020 and the Heights is a vibrant community only minutes from Downtown Houston. Filled with unique shops, famous restaurants, and traditional homes, the Heights is a community for anyone and everyone. The same historic charm has never left this neighborhood and is evident in the architecture of the buildings and the tree lined streets. With so many excellent places to choose from we selected a few of our favorite places to spotlight this week:
Common Bond Bakery
Named after the “common bond” of the love of good food that can bring people together, this bistro and bakery has five locations across the city of Houston that serve amazing pastries and baked goods. With two locations in the Heights, one at 449 W 19th Street, and an on-the-go location at 601 Heights Boulevard, you are never far from grabbing an assortment of cookies, Black Forest Cheesecake, Macarons, and more. You can go to their website, www.commonbondcafe.com, right now to pre-order your holiday treats like “Dutch Apple Pie”, “Gingerbread Loaf”, and “Bourbon Pecan Pie” for pick up at the Heights Bistro Location on December 23rd and 24th. Some holiday treats include beverages like “Gingerbread Freeze” and “Mocha Peppermint Frozen Bond.”
Revival Market
Serving breakfast and lunch daily this local craft market and butcher shop offers visitors carefully sourced items that come from producers in the Houston area. Meats sold at the Revival meat counter come from their very own farm “Revival Meats” where they raise chickens, pigs, and lamb. In addition to purchasing produce, breads, and other specialty items, you can order from their breakfast and lunch menu as well as the wine and cocktail menu. Some favorites include the “Garlic & Herb Chicken Sandwich,” or the “Revival Breakfast Burrito.”
Fat Cat Creamery
This small parlor style ice cream shop is not your typical ice cream store. With flavors like “Whiskey Butter Pecan” and “Hardcore Chocolate” this shop has excelled in coming up with fun, unique flavors that are beloved by many Houstonians. Fat Cat uses produce sourced from Texas dairy farms, supporting fellow local businesses! They are constantly coming up with new flavors to try and have lots of to go pint options for you to enjoy at home. Some seasonal holiday flavors include:
- Boozy Eggnog which is made using eggnog ice cream with fresh nutmeg, white rum, and brandy
- Gingerbread Crunch made with Gingerbread-spiced brown sugar ice cream with chunks of homemade speculoos cookies
- Creamy Winterberry made using cream cheese-vanilla bean ice cream with swirls of lingonberry jam
