In less than 45 days, more than 500,000 FIFA fans are expected to descend on the city this summer, and Houston is about to transform in a way it has never seen before. Across the city, screens are being installed, watch parties are selling out, and businesses across the city are preparing for what is shaping up to be the biggest summer in Houston history.
The event is predicted to generate approximately $1.5 billion in economic impact for the region and for a city that has quietly become one of the greatest in America, this is simply Houston's time. Even the city itself is getting ready, streets are being repaved, landscapes are being refreshed, and the neighborhoods we love across Houston are being transformed in preparation for the global spotlight.
As one of the most diverse cities in America, Houston does not just celebrate different cultures, it is built on them. This summer, the city will have the chance to prove it on the world's biggest stage. For some of the hundreds of thousands of fans making their way, this will be their very first time setting foot in the United States. Their first American city, American memory, first impression of this country, and it is going to be Houston.
The Most Watched Event on the Planet Is Coming to NRG Stadium
The FIFA World Cup is the single most watched event on the planet. Over five billion people tuned in for the last tournament, and in just a few months, some of those matches will be played right here in Houston at NRG Stadium, one of the most celebrated venues in the country.
Houston is one of only 16 host cities selected across the United States, Canada, and Mexico and is sharing the stage with iconic cities like New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Mexico City. For a city that has hosted Super Bowls, All-Star Games, and some of the biggest events in American sports history, this is still something different. The World Cup is in a category of its own.
