Until December 4, River Oaks' holiday season runs along West Gray and Westheimer, and most of it can be planned a day or two ahead. After that date it moves to Bayou Bend. Christmas Village opens there for 21 nights, with ticketed admission, $20 card-only parking in short supply, and six December dates when the estate is closed.
November's events take a reservation or a little attention to road closures. In December, getting a parking spot and picking an open night become the real work. The handoff plays out over the next five weeks.
November happens at the two shopping centers
River Oaks Shopping Center opens the season on Thursday, November 12, with "Sip, Shop, Savor." VIP shopping runs from 5 to 6 p.m. and the public event from 6 to 8 p.m. The center's Happenings page asks guests to RSVP. It lists no admission price, and it shows the date without a year.
On Westheimer the next afternoon, River Oaks District hosts a two-day Jenni Kayne x De La Paix jewelry pop-up in Suite D115 at 4444 Westheimer Road. It runs Friday, November 13, and Saturday, November 14, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The anchor event comes a week later. The District's holiday tree lighting is Saturday, November 21, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a Breakfast at Tiffany's live performance and Santa's arrival. The listing names no admission price.
All of this is retail programming, set on the commercial edges of the neighborhood and scheduled around shopping hours. None of it needs a ticket bought weeks out. River Oaks District's own events calendar currently lists nothing after Thanksgiving.
The morning after the tree lighting, Memorial Drive closes
The tree-lighting weekend ends with a road closure. According to the City of Houston's special events planned-routes sheet, the Houston 25K closes Memorial Drive inbound and outbound between Bagby and Shepherd on Sunday, November 22, from 6 to 11:30 a.m. Bagby also closes in both directions between Texas and Prairie.
Anyone heading downtown that Sunday morning, or planning a run or a brunch, has a few hours with a familiar Memorial Drive route out of service. The same sheet, printed October 23, 2026, lists no closures tied to the tree lighting itself or to Christmas Village.
Thanksgiving is a reservation decision, and two local tables are taking them
Thanksgiving Day, November 26, offers two River Oaks options at different price points, one at each center.
| Leo's River Oaks | Le Colonial | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | 2009 W. Gray St., at the River Oaks Theatre | 4444 Westheimer Road, Suite G140, River Oaks District |
| Format | Three-course prix fixe plus a limited à la carte menu | Three-course prix fixe; takeout available |
| Price | $75 per person | $105 per person, plus tax and gratuity |
| Hours | Reservations via OpenTable | Noon to 8 p.m. |
Leo's River Oaks has a Thanksgiving reservation listing up. In October 2024 the Houston Chronicle reported that the restaurant was scheduled to debut at the restored theatre on October 22 of that year. The theatre's own site says Culinary Khancepts and Star Cinema Grill acquired it after its 2021 closure and reopened it on October 3, 2024.
Le Colonial is opening on Thanksgiving for the first time. Its menu includes a Hanoi roasted Thanksgiving duck. For a household that wants to host at home without cooking the main course, the takeout option is the useful detail.
The parade puts a road constraint on the same morning. The city's route sheet schedules the Thanksgiving parade for 8 to 11 a.m., and staging and disbanding close inbound Allen Parkway between Taft and Bagby from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. A noon reservation is unaffected by the parade route itself. A trip toward downtown along Allen Parkway before 2 p.m. will need another route.
On December 4, the season moves to Bayou Bend
Christmas Village at Bayou Bend 2026 opens Friday, December 4, and runs through December 30. It spreads thousands of lights across the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's 14-acre estate, and visitors enter over a lit bridge.
The inside of the event looks nothing like November's retail programming. There is faux snow for sledding, a hunt for Santa's reindeer, and a handcrafted model train circling a 15-foot Christmas tree. Houston's Culinary Institute Lenotre built a gingerbread village. Short films come from Berlin's Weihnachtsfilmfestival, there is a 3-D video animation by LD Systems, and carolers perform among music-bell stations. A theatrical tour of the historic house's first floor, with live actors, is an upgrade.
Starting December 4, getting in takes a ticket plus a plan for parking.
| Ticket | Nonmember | MFAH member |
|---|---|---|
| Ages 13 and up | Starting at $18 | Starting at $16 |
| Ages 5 to 12 | Starting at $12 | Starting at $10 |
| Ages 4 and younger | Free | Free |
| House-tour upgrade | Adds $5 per admission, free tickets included | Same |
Every price is listed as "starting at," so the cost on a given night may be higher. A family of two adults and two children aged 5 to 12 pays at least $60 at nonmember prices before parking. MFAH members pay at least $52. Santa photos cost $10 through December 23.
Parking is the real limit. MFAH lists "a limited amount of parking" at $20, card only, plus a limited amount of free offsite parking, and says ride shares are "strongly encouraged." The event runs rain or shine. Visitors with limited mobility are asked to call 713-639-7750 before arriving.
The open nights follow a weekly rhythm
Christmas Village doesn't run every night, and the closed nights cluster. MFAH lists the estate as closed on:
- Monday, December 7, and Tuesday, December 8
- Monday, December 14, and Tuesday, December 15
- Thursday, December 24, and Friday, December 25
Hours vary by day of the week, and the pattern is worth learning:
- Fridays and Saturdays: 5:30 to 10 p.m., the longest regular hours.
- Wednesdays and Thursdays: 5:30 to 9 p.m.
- Sundays: 4:30 to 9 p.m., the only regular nights that open before dark.
- Christmas week: Monday through Wednesday, December 21 to 23, plus Saturday, December 26, all run 5:30 to 10 p.m., so weeknights that week get weekend hours.
- The final stretch: Monday, December 28, and Wednesday, December 30, run 5:30 to 9 p.m.
The two sensory-friendly nights are Sunday, December 6, and Tuesday, December 29, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. On those nights fewer tickets are sold. Sensory kits and a quiet room are available, sound, light and theatrical effects are adjusted, and house-tour admissions are good all evening. MFAH's summary schedule and its date-by-date list disagree about Sunday, December 27. The dated list shows 4:30 to 9 p.m., so check that night when buying tickets.
Two Wednesday nights where Bayou Bend overlaps with something free
December 9 and 16 are both Wednesdays, when Christmas Village runs 5:30 to 9 p.m. On those same evenings, Buffalo Bayou Partnership runs its free Tinsel Trek from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., listed separately for December 9 and December 16. The walk leaves from 105 Sabine St. and covers three miles in about an hour and a half, taking in the park and downtown's holiday lights.
That leaves two holiday-light options on the same two weeknights: a ticketed estate with paid, limited parking, or a free group walk along the bayou. Anyone wanting both should note that the evenings overlap almost completely, so doing both on one night isn't practical.
What's on the 2027 calendar for the same two centers
The handoff will likely look a little different next year, because both retail centers have announced tenants. Community Impact reported that Leica plans its first Texas store and gallery at River Oaks District, next to Le Colonial, with an opening slated for 2027 and no specific date. On West Gray, Community Impact also reported that New York-based SotoMethod plans a studio at 2028 W. Gray St., Suite 0008A. Renovations are projected to start in February 2027 and finish by August, and the outlet noted the details could change.
For this season, three dates matter most: Saturday, November 21, for the tree lighting; Thursday, November 26, for a Thanksgiving table; and Friday, December 4, when Christmas Village opens and the decisions shift to tickets and parking.
