Houston Rodeo Announces Historic $300 Million Expansion Along Highway 288

The largest single capital investment in rodeo history is coming to houston, and Nan and Company Properties is proud to be an official corporate sponsor
June 25, 2026

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has always been one of the greatest institutions this city has ever produced. And now, after nearly a century of serving Texas youth, agriculture, and the Houston community, the Rodeo is making its boldest move yet.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has officially announced plans for a historic $300 million agricultural and livestock complex on Rodeo-owned property along Highway 288, the largest single capital investment in the organization's more than 95-year history. Adding over one million square feet of new, world-class facilities, this landmark project is designed to carry the Rodeo's mission of education, youth development, and Western heritage well into its second century.

At Nan and Company Properties, Houston's largest independent luxury real estate brokerage and an official corporate sponsor of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, this announcement is one we are incredibly excited to celebrate. The Rodeo represents the very best of Houston,  its community spirit, its commitment to the next generation, and its willingness to invest boldly in the future. We are honored to stand alongside this institution as it takes its most significant step forward in history.

THE LARGEST INVESTMENT IN RODEO HISTORY

For decades, horse shows and many livestock competitions have operated out of NRG Arena, a facility that opened in the 1970s and, by the Rodeo's own assessment, has reached the end of its useful lifespan. Rather than waiting for public funding or settling for a patchwork solution, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is independently funding a purpose-built complex designed around the needs of today's exhibitors, students, and families, and the ambitions of the next 100 years.

WHAT MOVES, WHAT STAYS, AND WHAT IT MEANS

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been clear: this expansion complements NRG Park, it does not replace it. The Rodeo is not leaving its home of more than 65 years. NRG Park will continue hosting concerts, carnival attractions, major exhibitions, and the signature experiences that millions of Houston visitors know and love.

What moves to the new Highway 288 complex during the annual Rodeo includes horse show competitions, junior and open breeding shows, select livestock events, agricultural mechanics competitions, archery events, commercial auctions, educational contests, 4-H programming, and intercollegiate agricultural competitions. The result is a more efficient, more modern operation, with reduced travel distances, shorter wait times, expanded family gathering areas, and state-of-the-art facilities that reflect the scale of what the Rodeo has become.

A YEAR-ROUND HUB FOR HOUSTON

One of the most significant aspects of this project goes far beyond the three-week Rodeo season.

The new complex is being designed as a year-round destination for agricultural education, youth development programs, fundraisers and galas, committee meetings, livestock and equine events, community gatherings, and Western heritage programming. The flexible building design allows for seamless adaptability across a wide range of events and experiences, creating new opportunities for Texas students, agricultural organizations, and the Houston community throughout the entire year.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2029 AND BEYOND

Construction is expected to begin following a groundbreaking planned for late 2026, with the goal of opening the new complex in time for the 2029 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Additional details and renderings are expected to be released later this year.

The timing is significant. As the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo prepares for its centennial celebration in 2032, and with more than $660 million already committed to Texas youth and education since its founding in 1932, this expansion positions the organization for its next century of impact in one of the world's great cities.
