With Hurricane Harvey set to hit the Texas coast this weekend, it’s important to take the necessary precautions for keeping you and your family safe. Here are 10 tips for preparing your home and your loved ones this weekend.
- Stay informed by monitoring the storm via the radio, television and internet.
- Prepare an emergency storm kit. Get a flashlight, a battery powered weather radio, first aid supplies, medicine, and extra batteries. Stock up on water and food that doesn’t need cooking.
- Winds can cause trees and branches to fall, so before the storm hits, trim or remove rotting trees and branches to keep you and your property safe.
- Reduce property damage to your home and others’ homes by securing or removing any outdoor furniture that could potentially be blown away.
- Stay inside. Even if it looks calm, DON’T go outside. Sometimes, weather gets calm in the middle of a storm but then gets worse again quickly.
- When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.
- Stay away from windows and glass doors. In case of severe winds, try to take cover under a staircase or a heavy piece of furniture.
- Delay travelling until the storm has subsided.
- If you must travel, do it slowly, and make sure to be as safe as possible. Keep seatbelts fastened, and give your full attention to the road. Check the tires and wipers on your car to ensure they are functioning properly.
- Purchase a portable generator to use in case of power outages. Remember to keep generators and other alternate power sources outside, at least 20 feet away from windows and doors, and protected from any wet surfaces.
