It’s no surprise that Houston has been ranked among the top 10 cities for relocating millennials in 2016. Millennials—young adults born between mid-1980s and late 1990s—are a mobile generation willing to relocate to mixed-use communities where they can work, live, and play. Houston has one of the largest millennial populations in the nation, with young adults comprising 14.5 percent of Houston’s overall population.
But why Houston? According to a recent study, nearly two-thirds said they were looking for job opportunities, 60 percent were attracted to the city’s affordable cost of living, and 58 percent found good housing options. The great thing about Houston is that we have several neighborhoods within our city where you can attain all of these. Neighborhoods like the Heights and Third Ward have been noted to have large millennial populations, but let’s check out a few more!
MIDTOWN
Midtown has been called the hottest neighborhood inside the Loop. Perfectly situated between Downtown and the Medical Center, Midtown is in the center of lively nightlife and has easy highway access to quickly take you to any corner of the city. It also happens to have the highest walkability and cycling scores in the city and is one of the few neighborhoods that can get the most out of the light rail. Some of the city’s hottest venues, bars, and restaurants are located in this ever-evolving neighborhood, just steps from condos, lofts, and apartments catering to millennials.
DOWNTOWN
A fast-paced and lively scene, this Houston neighborhood is perfect for millennials who want to be up close to all the Houston action. It is home to the city’s central business district, Theater District, and three of Houston’s professional sports arenas. Open spaces within Discovery Green and Market Square Park complement the busy spaces that bring business and entertainment. Most of Downtown’s residential options are lofts and midrise/highrise condos, allowing those who work in the area the option to “lock and leave.” Even better, getting around Downtown is easy! The METRORail, bus system, Houston B-Cycle, Zipcar and Green Link combined with a network of tunnels and skywalks make travel by car completely unnecessary.
MONTROSE
An eccentric neighborhood of quaint coffee shops, independent boutiques, free art galleries, a diverse ethnic community, bohemian culture, and spirited nightlife, Montrose has been referred to as the heart of Houston. A highly walkable neighborhood, most local errands, eating, and partying can be done on foot, with easy access to public transportation. Just minutes away from Downtown, the Medical Center, and Midtown, this area is a prime location for young professionals looking to be close to what's trendy!
WASHINGTON CORRIDOR/MEMORIAL PARK
The Washington Corridor is perfect for the young and the young at heart. Residents can eat and drink their way down Washington Avenue, experience the arts at any of the grand theaters, studios, or installations, and escape the urban hustle at the 1,500-acre Memorial Park. Ideal for the art buff and outdoor enthusiast alike, the Washington Corridor sits conveniently close to major freeways and affordable townhomes and apartments.
