On the Market: An Industrial Loft with a Historic Railroad Past

BAYOU LOFTS IS A RARE HOUSTON EXAMPLE of repurposing a historic property—in this case, Southern Pacific Railroad’s former headquarters for 85 years. When it comes time to rethink a building’s use, logistics—usually of the financial variety—all too often make a wrecking ball the developer’s preferred choice. Downtown residents are lucky that wasn’t the case at 915 Franklin St., where Bayou Lofts have given new life to the old railroad building with a thoughtful remodel that preserved the historic spot’s industrial feel.

That feeling is on full display in unit 9F, the 2,380-square-foot condo recently listed for $1.17 million with Nan & Company Properties. Previously two separate units, the space was completely gutted and converted into one oversized, split-level loft with four beds and four baths. An open-concept living room offers dramatic downtown views, and charming details like exposed ductwork are constant reminders of the building’s former life.

The renovation resulted in upgrades throughout the entire space, too, starting with the kitchen’s sleek, state-of-the-art appliances, wine coolers, and a multi-LED lighting pendant. Bathrooms are equally lust-worthy thanks to free-standing tubs and rainfall shower heads, and a massive custom closet enhances the master suite.

Then there are the community amenities at Bayou Lofts, including a gym and pool. Perhaps best of all, though, is the location itself, within walking distance of prime attractions that are only poised to expand with the downtown district’s recent renaissance.
