Setting Goals for The New Year

Setting New Year’s resolutions is a common traditional that has been practiced for years. The phrase “New Year’s resolutions” insights different emotions in everyone. For some it’s a chance to start fresh in the new year, maybe you want to start exercising or eating better. For others it’s a daunting task that holds you accountable to things you need to change. Setting new goals for the new year doesn’t have to be scary or tricky, it can actually be really helpful to prepare yourself and get in the right mindspace for a new chapter. Here are a few tips on how to set goals or prepare your New Year’s resolutions.

Carefully prepare: When setting your goals for the new year make sure you have a plan ready! Take time to thoughtfully prepare yourself for what you need to do to achieve your goals. If the goal is to eat healthier you can start by looking at your current eating habits and adjusting where you see necessary. Make a list of healthy meals you would like to prepare.

Be Realistic: This seems like a no brainer, however almost half the people who make New Year’s resolutions actually follow through with them. Maybe that’s because they set goals and expectations that are unattainable or too far from the reality. Your goals should be manageable or else they will fall apart.

Give yourself a break: It’s easy to get your mind set on doing something and lose track of the fact that you are still human! We all make mistakes, so if you find yourself wanting dessert when your resolution was to lose weight remind yourself that it’s okay to treat yourself every once in a while.

Create a support system: It can be extremely helpful to surround yourself with people who support the goals you are trying to accomplish. If you feel comfortable, let those closest to you know what you want to achieve. They can help you feel supported while you are trying to make these changes.
