The start of a new season brings the need for starting fresh, and Spring is no exception. We have all heard the phrase “Spring Cleaning,” and we all have different reactions when we think about it. Some homeowners can’t wait for a deep clean of their home to ring in the new season. Others shudder at the idea of having to clean the home they have been stuck inside in during the colder winter months. Spring cleaning shouldn’t be scary, and with the help of two of our agents, Deborah McGuire and Jeannie Jacobs, we can provide you some tips on where to start.
Take Inventory
Your first step of doing a deep clean of your home should always be to take inventory of what you have and what you don’t necessarily need for the new season. Many homeowners start this project in their closet, the place that can be the most unorganized in the home and in desperate need of a refresher. Once winter is over, there is no need for your heavy winter clothing items such as coats, scarves, hats, gloves, etc. This is a perfect time to take these items out of your closet and place them in a storage box where they can live until temperatures drop again. If you don’t have room for a storage box, shift your winter clothes to the very back of your closet and push your spring/summer clothes to the front. This will create an easy access situation for your wardrobe.
Moving Around
“Spring is a great time to move furniture around so that one can dust and clean underneath. Especially those sofa cushions! You will be surprised to recover previously lost or forgotten items,” said Nan Agent Jeannie Jacobs. Consider renting or purchasing a high-power HEPA vacuum or carpet cleaner that can allow you to do a deep cleaning of your floors. This will make a huge difference in your room’s feel and help eliminate harmful dust that has accumulated.
Create an Organization System
“I recommend getting color-coded baskets for households with children. Each child gets a different color. I keep my baskets on the stairs landing. Anytime I come across one child's items, I toss them in the basket. At the end of the day, everyone helps put their things in the correct basket. When it's bedtime, each child carries his/her basket into their bedroom!” Said Nan Agent Deborah McGuire. It is never too late to implement a new organizational system that works for you and your family.
